On July 15, a driver in a white Ford F-150 struck an 80-year-old woman near Hermosa Drive and Vista Chino, stopped briefly, then drove off. The woman was hospitalized with major injuries. It took Palm Springs police two weeks, help from the Coachella Valley Real-Time Intelligence Center, and a search warrant on Nicola Road before they arrested James Schadlick, 67, booking him into the Benoit Detention Center on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing injury. Investigators say they recovered the truck at the search location. It's the kind of case that moves in fits and starts — weeks of quiet investigative work, then a single afternoon where all of it resolves — and it closes with the victim's condition still not publicly known.

Modernism Week's wait has a lighter shape but the same rhythm: months of planning surfacing all at once. The organization has set its schedule for a four-day fall festival, October 15 through 18, smaller in scope than the group's usual eleven-day February run but stacked with more than 50 events. New this year: a Fall Dining Series across five restaurants, After Dark socials at Hotel Zoso and Ace Hotel, a wine tasting at Hall Winery, and — a first for the event — a guided tour up the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. CEO Lisa Vossler Smith framed the additions as a chance for guests to move beyond the standard home-tour circuit into dining and social settings built around the same midcentury design obsession. Tickets go on sale today, August 1, at noon.

Neither story needed drama to matter. One closes a case that had been sitting open on a residential street for two weeks; the other opens a calendar that residents will be checking against their own for the next ten. Both were just waiting for their moment to land.
